What is Photobiomodulation (PBM), and how does it work?
  1. Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a therapy that uses red and near-infrared light to promote healing and reduce pain. It typically involves low-level lasers or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that emit specific wavelengths of light.
  2. Here’s how it works in simple terms:
    1. Light Absorption: The light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by cells, particularly by the mitochondria (the cell’s energy producers).
    2. Energy Production: When the light is absorbed, it boosts the mitochondria’s energy production. This increase in energy helps the cells repair themselves and regenerate.
    3. Healing Process: The enhanced energy promotes faster healing, reduces inflammation, and can help alleviate pain.
  3. Overall, PBM harnesses light to aid the body’s natural healing processes.

Yes, photobiomodulation is safe to use. The red lights used are low-level lasers that have no harmful effects on the skin. Red light therapy has been studied for over 20 years with 7000 clinical trials, 500 from which were used for human studies. However it is most important to be aware of any contraindications and consult a healthcare professional before use.

Red light therapy can be applied in two main ways: complete body treatment and localized treatment, each serving different purposes. Full-body treatment involves exposing the entire body to red light, typically using larger devices like full-body panels or beds. This approach aims to promote overall wellness, boost energy levels, improve skin health, enhance mood, and support recovery from various ailments. It is suitable for general health benefits, improving circulation, and boosting metabolism. In contrast, localized treatment targets specific body areas using smaller devices like handheld units. This method treats specific issues like joint pain, muscle soreness, skin conditions (such as acne or scars), or localized inflammation. It is ideal for targeted pain relief, injury recovery, or cosmetic treatments. In summary, while full-body treatment offers comprehensive benefits, localized treatment is more about addressing specific concerns.

Commercial red light therapy offers several advantages over at-home devices. Professional units typically provide higher-intensity light, enhancing effectiveness and leading to quicker results. They use advanced technology with optimized wavelengths for therapy and ensure comprehensive coverage for uniform treatment. Access to trained professionals allows personalized recommendations, while standardized protocols ensure consistent quality and efficiency. Additionally, commercial facilities maintain safety devices, reducing concerns about overexposure. While at-home options provide convenience, commercial red light therapy delivers a more robust and guided experience.

Not all red light therapy treatments are the same; they can differ in several key aspects. Wavelengths typically range from 600 to 900 nanometers, targeting specific issues, while intensity levels can vary, affecting energy delivery and treatment speed. Depending on the condition and device type, session lengths may also differ—ranging from handheld units to larger panels or pods. Additionally, professional treatments often follow standardized protocols based on research, whereas at-home devices may lack such guidance. Finally, some devices incorporate features like infrared light or pulsing, further influencing their effectiveness.

From the clinical trials that have been studied, photobiomodulation treats various conditions, including muscle pain, joint disorders, wound healing, PTSD, skin conditions, macular degeneration and numerous other conditions.

No. Red light therapy uses red and near infrared light that gets absorbed by the skin that leads to many benefits. For example, red light therapy has shown to improve fine lines and wrinkles, repair the skin from any sun damage, and aids in treating acne, brown spots, Psoriasis, Rosacea and more. UV light is known for its germicidal properties and is commonly used for disinfection.

Time depends on the client’s treatment plan. Treatment times can vary from about 30 minutes to one hour.
A red light therapy session typically lasts 30 minutes to one hour, depending on the area being treated and the specific device used. Sessions may be slightly shorter for full-body treatments, whereas localized treatments typically have a longer duration. To achieve the best results, it is recommended to have regular sessions, three times a week.

The results will vary between each individual and what conditions are being treated. Some individuals notice the difference after a few sessions, while others make several more consistent therapies. Responses may differ.

For photobiomodulation to work to its greatest effect it must penetrate the skin. At REDGEN we recommend removal of all clothing, although undergarments or a bikini may be left on if preferred. For injury rehabilitation sessions only removal of clothing for specific areas of treatment. DO NOT use any SPF makeup as it prevents any red light waves from penetrating the skin
